It is an understatement to say that the Met Gala is one of the most anticipated events in the fashion year. The theme for this year was Rei Kawakacubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. It's obvious that the Met Ball is not there showcase simplicity and mediocrity, especially when they have themes like this. However, the function is known for their guests' tendency to stray away from the theme and wear simple, commonplace looks, those that are appropriate for award shows such as the Grammy's and other red carpet events that do not celebrate creativity. It was quite shocking to see how many people missed the opportunity to explore different patterns, shapes, colours, layers etc. at this years Met Ball. After all, creative and bold looks is literally what Comme des Garçons is all about. This years Met Gala was quite disappointing but nevertheless there were a few people that truly embodied and captured the theme. Here's a list of some of my favourite looks from the Met Gala 2017
1. RIHANNA
Rihanna wore Comme des Garçons to the 2017 Met Gala. Her appearance this year further cemented her spot as the queen of the Met Ball. She was one of the few guests that dared to tackle the theme and she did so admirable and charmingly. Her outfit was full of colour and volume, it was playful and extravagant. It's clear to say that she won the Met Gala once again.
2. TRACEE ELLIS ROSS
Tracee Ellis Ross shone in her Comme des Garçons outfit throughout the evening. I loved how simple yet complex this look was. The shades and pattern remained the same but the shapes and design of the dress made it appear 3D, which is something Rei Kawakacubo is famous for doing.
3. KATY PERRY
Katy Perry was one of the first attendees to grace the event this year, and she set the bar extremely high. Not only did she follow the theme she explored it in an amazing way. The reoccurrence of mainly one shade enhanced her look and the use of tulle as a veil took me back to Comme des Garçons Fall 2005 collection. Well done Katy Perry!
4. JANELLE MONÁE
Earlier this year, Monáe made an appearance at several red carpet events and each time she would somehow manage to outdo herself. I was so excited to see how Janelle would approach this years theme and I wasn't let down. Her gown was elaborate and she managed to make something so spontaneous look graceful and elegant, while capturing the theme completely.
5. LILY ALDRIDGE
Compared to the other Victoria's Secret models, Lily was by far the best dressed (not to say that the others looked bad.) Her take on the theme was much less bold compared to other attendees but it managed to work. The clashing colours of the red Balenciaga thigh high boots, the white gown and the pink head piece worked extremely well and made her look effortlessly good.

6. SOLANGE KNOWLES
Solange's outfit had me very conflicted. While she was embracing the theme in certain aspects in others she wasn't. Although the outfit looked like a mix between a sleeping bag and a garbage bag, she still managed to make it look good?! I applaud her for going above and beyond and daring to be bold.

7. LUPITA NYONG'O
Lupita Nyong'o is on this list solely because of her ethereal beauty. It's evident that orange was made for Lupita.

8. LIU WEN
Liu Wen looked absolutely gorgeous while at the Met Gala. Although she did not echo the theme in the slightest, you can't not put someone that looked that stunning on the best dressed list.

9. HAILEY BALDWIN
Normally I'm not the biggest fan of Hailey Baldwin, however, it's necessary to give credit where credit is due. Hailey looked beautiful on the cream carpet. The layering of tulle gave a slight hint of Comme des Garçons although it was hardly enough to be on theme.
10. CAROLINE KENNEDY
Unfortunately I couldn't find a better photo to do Caroline Kennedy's outfit justice. She payed tribute to her dear friend Rei Kawakacubo and by embracing the theme whole heartedly she managed to capture everyones attention and feature on the headlines of several articles (for both good and bad reasons).
However underwhelming the Met Gala was this year, it still echoed with beauty and brilliance.
